WEEK 11 – Lucky

Image
WEEK 11 – Lucky Linked to “ lucky ” I have gone with the “ luck ” of the Irish”. My 2x great grandparents (and further back) on my Dad’s paternal side were Irish. For as long as I can remember I have known those who we got our name from – Robert Lackey and Mary Jane Jackson. I knew the names of both fathers from their marriage cert, so I knew my 3 rd great grandfathers but not their wives. Mary had a possibility of 5 mothers! (see below). As I’m writing this it is St Patricks Day. And this week has been very “ lucky ” for me. A lovely gentleman who is linked to the Irish Jackson’s in my family has finally made a break though and got “ lucky ” with parish records and has kindly shared them with me. As of yesterday 16 th March 2023, I now know my 3 rd great grandparents linked to 2 nd great grandmother. As above, prior to today I only had Mary’s father’s name from her marriage certificate. I had 5 possible wives of different names, as they all had a marriage to a Thomas a...

How many trees to make a (Forest) Family?

Image
How many trees to make a Forest Family? So, I ask this question? How many trees does it take to make a family? Many people will probably wonder what I'm on about, think I'm mad etc as trees make forests (and paper) NOT families. This is semi true, trees also make families if you are doing a family tree! So I ask the question again - How many trees does it take to make a family? Many people would say one. In many ways I agree with this BUT in another way I totally don't agree, read on and I will explain my reason and logic for this. As it stands I currently have 15 family trees on my family tree maker. You may be think who needs that many or do I have so many etc. Let me tell you. I have my "main family tree", this doesn't get people added to it until I have a proven link that they are related to me. I have in the past added people as I found them only to find out down the line that they didn't marry my joe blogs, but joe blogs round the corner and had to ...

Week 7 (Feb. 15-21): Unusual Source – village notice board

Image
Week 7 (Feb. 15-21): Unusual Source – village notice board From Amy Johnson-Crow -  Week 7's theme is "Unusual Source." Not all of our genealogy discoveries come in the "regular" sources like vital records and the census. What is a discovery that you've made using an unusual source? An online Village notice board linked to Saintfield, Ireland is the most “unusual source” that I have gathered information about my ancestors from. Well, technically speaking I didn’t get the information about them off the notice board, I posted an advert onto it a few years ago asking for any information linked to my family who had lived in the area in the 1800's and possibly any who are still living today, and I heard nothing, that was until a couple of weeks ago. VILLAGE NOTICE BOARD I had a lady message me saying she had seen my advert online on the village notice board linked to my “Lackey and Jackson” family of Saintfield, Ireland. She believed she could help me out...

2021 Week 2 (Jan. 11-17): Family Legend – Lackey Family

Image
Week 2 (Jan. 11-17): Family Legend – Lackey Family I’m not using the title of “family legend” as someone who is classed as a “family legend” for what they have done but in the sense of “family legend” linked to a story. My initial thought for “family legend” was to use an ancestor that has been mentioned mainly at funerals and in stories told but no records can be found linked to him, but upon checking I used him in a 52/52 last year so the story would be the same as I have no new information. Therefore I am going with my paternal lineage as a whole, the Lackey family of Ireland. The “family legend” around the Lackey family is that hundreds of years ago the Lackey family didn’t exist as such. They did, but not under the Lackey name, nor were they from Ireland. I know the name Lackey means “slave or servant” and this is linked to the “family legend ”. Story has it that the Lackey family originated from Scotland. They were part of the clan MacGregor (and if you can trac...

52 ancestors Week 22 (May 27th -June 2nd ): Uncertain

Image
Week 22 (May 27 th -June 2 nd ): Uncertain From Amy Johnson Crow -Chances are you have at least one person listed in your family tree who you're not quite sure about. This would be a good week to write about him or her. Sometimes writing out what you know (or what you think you know) can help you discover things you're missing and things that don't add up the way you thought. When I 1 st saw this theme of " uncertain " back in January when I signed up the 52 ancestors challenge and got the full list of weekly challenges I was like this could be taken so many ways and linked to so many people, how am I going to choose someone to write about. Then in the middle of February I came across a website that had some of my ancestors in it but also some information I wasn’t aware of. This decided for me who I was using for this week’s theme of “ uncertain ”. I decided to use my 3 rd Great Grandfather Thomas Jackson, well linked to him as I know who he is...

52 ancestors Week 19 (May 6th -12th ): Service

Image
Week 19 (May 6 th -12 th ): Service From Amy Johnson Crow -   Military service might be the first thing to come to mind with this week's prompt. However, you don't have to go that route. Any service station owners in the family tree? (I'm raising my hand on that one!) How about someone who served their church, school, or community? For this weeks theme of “ service ” I have decided to use an ancestor that served in the army and died in “ service ” for his county. This person is my 1 st cousin 3times removed James Lackey. James was born in Saintfield, Ireland in November 1892. His parents are not known, but I have found a possible record of a baptism with mother only listed, meaning father unknown and his mother would have been my 2nd great grandfathers sister. He moved from Ireland at some-point between his birth and the 1901 census over to West Rainton, Durham where he lived with his Uncle and Aunt, Robert & Mary Lackey, as he is listed on the 19...

jackson familly of kilmore and saintfield ireland

My 2nd great grandmother was Mary Jane Jackson born 1845 kilmore Ireland. According to her marriage cert her father was Thomas Jackson - all good and easy. However, her father is not such an easy task to sort out as there are not many records linked to ireland surving. From what i have found online linked to him it is different information on every site, that aside its not totally different just bits of it. Take for instance the 3 wives and 16 children - ignore wife 3 for a moment, wife 1 has 10, wife 2 has 6 yep makes. Then i find a 3rd wife and she has a combination of the children. So i'm now back where i was ages ago and have no idea of who his wife actually is. 1 i found the records on family search and also linked to family trees on ancestry, the 2nd i found again on family search and via irish baptism records and the 3rd ive found on a personal website linked to the family. This is so hard to find out, the kids names are not all common and some of them my 2nd great gra...
