WEEK 45 – war and peace

Image
WEEK 45 – war and peace Many of my ancestors went to ”war” but not so many kept the “peace”. Two ancestors who did keep the “peace” were Reverend David Stewart Kerr Coulter and Reverend William Lackey. Reverend D.S.K Coulter was the brother-in-law of my 2 nd great uncle and was ordained at Dromore West, Ireland on 17 th May 1876 and resigned 15 th January 1878. Rev David was the son of John and Jane, he was born 1853 co.Down, Ireland. He married Mry Patterson Cambell and they had 2 confirmed children. Rev. David died October 1932, Co.Down. Reverend William Lackey was my 4 th cousin 1x removed, he was born 1903 in Oldham, Lancashire, he was the son of Charles and Alice. He married Florence Crossman and they had 4 children. He worked at both Ellington Thorpe in Cambridgeshire and Nova Scotia Canada. rev William Lackey River St John,  Nova Scotia, Canada

Week 3 2023 - out of place

WEEK 3 – Out of place This puzzled me as to what I could write about. Items “ out of place” , couldn’t think of any, records “ out of place” there are probably loads, people “ out of place” again probably loads. I really was having difficulty with this theme. I went to my Ancestry tree to look at and possibly add hints (I re-started my tree due to deleting a person of big link by accident so have lots of hints.) Anyway, on the home page it said about upcoming events linked to family etc and it showed my maternal Grandad, which gave me a good idea – his niece! She ended up “ out of place” of the family during the war. Avril Doreen Haylock was the daughter of Dora Haylock and unknown father, she was born 26 th April 1931 in Eastbourne, Sussex. (confirmed by birth certificate). Sadly not much is known on Avril or her life. In 1939 she was living with her Grandparents (George and Alice – Dora’s parents) and not with her mother for whatever reason, my thoughts are because Dora...

52 ancestors Week 33 (Aug. 16-22): Tragedy

Week 33 (Aug. 16-22): Tragedy - Haylock Sisters The biggest “ tragedy ” I have come across linked to my family/ancestors was 3 sisters who were killed as civilians in the WW2 bombing at the place they had been sent to for safety, shelter and refuge. Their mother died 2 weeks after the bombing that she had survived but sustained injuries at. The 3 sisters were my 3 rd cousins twice removed but of my direct maternal linage. Florence Emily, Dora Ellen and Marjorie Haylock are the young girls of this “ tragedy ”. Florence was born 14 th August 1922 in Bermondsey, Uk, she was the eldest daughter of Alfred George Haylock and Florence Elizabeth Ogier.  Dora was born 6 th February 1928 in Bermondsey, UK and the middle daughter and Marjorie was born January 1930 in Bermondsey, UK and was the youngest child. The quote left is quite shocking in itself but doesn’t even cover the “ tragedy ” that was to follow as the war progressed. The first day of the Blitz in Bermondsey was S...

Week 22 (May 31-June 6): Military

Image
Week 22 (May 31-June 6): Military Many of my ancestors served in the military over the years. And there could be lots that I could write about. However, the 3 main that I know about I have previously used. Therefore, I am going to use my step-grandfather, but was 1 the only grandfather I actually met. Stanley Archibald Powell was born 27 th July 1915 in Littleport near Ely, Cambridgeshire, UK. He was the 1 st son, and eldest child of 7 that Lilly May Powell and unknown father had. He died the 27 th September 2010 in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. Stanley married twice in his life, he apparently had 3 sons with his first wife Mary Agnes ? (but nothing is known on them including names or date’s of birth, meaning this has been hard to locate them) and then he had a daughter with his second wife Doreen, and took on her other two children including my Mum. Stanley’s military dates are unknown, but he was a full time soldier before the start of WWII, of which he was involved with, he...

52 ancestors Week 19 (May 6th -12th ): Service

Week 19 (May 6 th -12 th ): Service From Amy Johnson Crow -   Military service might be the first thing to come to mind with this week's prompt. However, you don't have to go that route. Any service station owners in the family tree? (I'm raising my hand on that one!) How about someone who served their church, school, or community? For this weeks theme of “ service ” I have decided to use an ancestor that served in the army and died in “ service ” for his county. This person is my 1 st cousin 3times removed James Lackey. James was born in Saintfield, Ireland in November 1892. His parents are not known, but I have found a possible record of a baptism with mother only listed, meaning father unknown and his mother would have been my 2nd great grandfathers sister. He moved from Ireland at some-point between his birth and the 1901 census over to West Rainton, Durham where he lived with his Uncle and Aunt, Robert & Mary Lackey, as he is listed on the 19...

VE DAY 75years anniversay May 8th 2020 This year marks 75years of VE day, and we will be celebrating it. I will amend this post as and when things get sorted over the next few days etc.  For the time being i am adding this picture/document I have made linked to my Grandad Reg and his time in the army. Me and the children have made them for other family members as well.
