Week 3 2023 - out of place

 WEEK 3 – Out of place

This puzzled me as to what I could write about. Items “out of place”, couldn’t think of any, records “out of place” there are probably loads, people “out of place” again probably loads. I really was having difficulty with this theme. I went to my Ancestry tree to look at and possibly add hints (I re-started my tree due to deleting a person of big link by accident so have lots of hints.) Anyway, on the home page it said about upcoming events linked to family etc and it showed my maternal Grandad, which gave me a good idea – his niece! She ended up “out of place” of the family during the war.

Avril Doreen Haylock was the daughter of Dora Haylock and unknown father, she was born 26th April 1931 in Eastbourne, Sussex. (confirmed by birth certificate). Sadly not much is known on Avril or her life. In 1939 she was living with her Grandparents (George and Alice – Dora’s parents) and not with her mother for whatever reason, my thoughts are because Dora wasn’t married and was working at the local vicarage as the housekeeper, so it wasn’t appropriate. (I've also had the thought of was the Vicar the father! but i cant prove this).

With the outbreak of war Avril was “shipped off” up north as a child refugee, most likely for her own safety, but again, this is unknown as to why. After the war ended Avril stayed up north and never returned to her mother or grandparents. Avril never married and died on 1st May 1981 In Catchgate, Durham.

Over the years that I met Dora and her husband; Avril was only mentioned on an odd occasion and there were no photos of her. It does make you wonder why Avril never returned.

From AJC This may not be everyone’s take on the them but it’s mine. As I’ve already stated I now live in Cumbria, more precisely the very west coast of Cumbria (well 1mile from the coast but close enough). This is what ignited my thoughts for the theme of “closer to home”. Before I go into things linked to the theme, I need to add some history – the Lackey family originally came from Scotland and were under the name of MacGregor, however due to bad behaviour they were banished from Scotland and sent to Ireland where they lost the MacGregor name and became Lackey’s (it means slave). After my line of the family left Ireland they moved to Durham, and from here they met and married families from Yorkshire and moved further afield. I live in Whitehaven, and on a (very) clear day you can see parts of Ireland from the Whitehaven Harbour, I haven’t yet seen it but it is said you can via the telescopes up on the cliffs and in the museum. Week 3 – Long Line (Jan 15-21)

Is there a trait or an occupation that seems to have been in your family tree for generations? Is there a line in your genealogy that's been in a particular place for a long, long time? Maybe you have Long as a surname. Be creative! From AJC This topic has taken a bit of thinking of what to write about. My first thought was do I have anyone named “Long” in the tree that I could use (1 lady who is distant relative so not much use or info), I then thought about how “long” it has taken me to do research and such BUT that doesn’t fit with the long line theme, so thinking cap back on and I thought about the longest line of the family tree going back to whoever, but the little voice in my head says “wont most people use this?” I then thought about the Lackey family occupation as boot & shoemakers as a long line, but it wasn’t really that long, so I decide to look at photos for inspiration and that’s when it hit me – My parents wedding photo’s loads of them had a “ Long Line ” ...

  Week 39 (Sept. 23-29): Should Be a Movie From Amy Johnson-Crow - Good movies have good stories at their heart. What ancestor has a story that you think should be a movie? This hasn’t been an east theme for me, as people I thought of have been used for other things. So it has come down to someone that I think would “ make a good movie ” (and you will see why) and that is my Great Grandfather Arthur Linett/Linel/Lynes/Linneth Thompson. (his name changes per document). Arthur was born the 11 th December 1876 in South Runcton, Norfolk. He was 1 of 11 children his parents had. He was 2 nd from youngest. His parents were farmers and he kept this on during his life. In the photos I have of him, he is always well dressed and has a hat, a pipe, shirt, waistcoat and pocket watch, which don’t add to the farmer feel.
