Week 39 (Sept. 23-29): Should Be a Movie

From Amy Johnson-Crow - Good movies have good stories at their heart. What ancestor has a story that you think should be a movie?

This hasn’t been an east theme for me, as people I thought of have been used for other things. So it has come down to someone that I think would “make a good movie” (and you will see why) and that is my Great Grandfather Arthur Linett/Linel/Lynes/Linneth Thompson. (his name changes per document).

Arthur was born the 11th December 1876 in South Runcton, Norfolk. He was 1 of 11 children his parents had. He was 2nd from youngest. His parents were farmers and he kept this on during his life.

In the photos I have of him, he is always well dressed and has a hat, a pipe, shirt, waistcoat and pocket watch, which don’t add to the farmer feel. To me it seems that he dressed up for photos to be taken, or he didn’t take an active role in the farming (which according to my Nan – Doreen, he did.) The last farm that he lived on is still today used as a farm of sorts – it now grows and sells garden turf.

Arthur was 1st married to an Emma Jane Crockford they married 28 Oct 1900 in Norfolk, England. Emma was the aunt of his 2nd Wife Amy Rose Bland they were married 17 April 1942 ely. (This is where the story becomes interesting!) According to the family Arthur and Emma had 5 sons and 2 daughters between them, however, I have NEVER been able to find anything definite to support this.

(Photo left shows Amy Rose Bland and Arthur L Thompson - looks like father and daughter not husband and wife!)

Amy Rose Bland (niece of his wife) was living with Arthur and Emma from a young age, and is listed as domestic house keeper on any documents. Arthur is 28years old than Amy. Emma died in 1943, I’m not 100% sure of what happened in the family but Arthur married his niece Amy in 1942! By this date Amy had already got 4 children (the plot thickens) who were apparently Arthur’s, BUT when the eldest of these was born Amy would have only been 15 or 16years old. I haven’t been able to find a birth for the male child but I think that he could possibly be Emma’s and not Amy’s. Amy also had another daughter after they were married and was also pregnant when she died in 1953 aged 49 and Arthur was 77!!!

Arthur was said to be a ladies man and even though he was married always had different ladies at the farm, that his wife (Amy) and their daughters would have to cook for.

I think his life would have made an interesting “movie”, and I certainly wish I knew more than I do on him.
