Week 44 (Oct. 28-Nov. 3): Scary Stuff

From Amy Johnson-Crow - Any ghost stories in your family lore? Any relatives live in a haunted house? Of course, you don't have to go with ghosts for the theme. I look forward to seeing how everyone interprets this theme

For the theme of “scary stuff” an ancestors life event near here would be good. BUT something even better is a relative that is believed to be a Witch AND died at this time! Let me introduce you to My Grandmother HILDA WOOD, the family WITCH.

Hilda was born 12th February 1910 in Bradford, she married William Liddle Lackey on 14th June 1932 at the Parish Church in Peterborough. She died 30th October 1979 in Peterborough. Hilda was my Grandmother, but I never met her, which in 1 way is a shame as I like all things witchcraft, but in another was good as she wouldn’t have liked me.

Hilda was the eldest child and only daughter of her parents – Arthur Wood and Mary Elizabeth Mitchell, she had 3 younger brothers. The whole family moved to Peterborough sometime after 1911.

My Dad said that his mother had various books that he was never allowed to touch and many were about Witches. No-one seems to know where her liking of witchcraft came from or why or weather it was something her mother did as well. But apparently she wasn’t a very nice lady (according to my Dad and my Mum). She would quite often mumble under breathe at people that crossed her and would then watch as “something” would happen (a favourite was the bottom of paper grocery bags splitting – her husband was the local grocer!)

My Dad also said that she often had wax creatures around the house and there was always loads of other ladies nipping in and out and she always grew herbs in the garden. Despite her “witchy ways” she was a very religious lady, and the whole family was at church every Sunday and on every special occasion going.

She believed that children should be seen and not heard and definitely not be speaking unless spoken to and was harsh on children she met, including my sister. This is why she wouldn’t have liked me as I say it as it is and I mouth back at people.

Although her death is listed as 30th October, my Dad said she died at midnight, so it could be classed as Halloween! The witch died on her own eve! To add to the “scary stuff” and spookiness of this her funeral was on bonfire night. My Mum recalled an argument that she and her mother-in-law had had some years before, and my Mum turned round and said “when you die we will burn you on the bonfire!” and that’s the date it happened!

I would have loved to have met her to find out if she really was a witch or just a healer lady for the village etc. But I know she wouldn’t have approved my outspoken ways.

My Mum was also into “scary stuff” and practised witchcraft and could quite easily curse people, and she did many times. Witchy stuff was never covered up and she always spoke of it if asked.
