52 ancestors Week 29 (July 15-21): Newsworthy

Before I start on this weeks theme of newsworthy i need add a note - the reason no posts gave been made linked to the weekly stories is that my laptop crashed and died and in the process i lost everything!!! All of my family history stuff, the stories, photos everything. You're probably thinking well you should have it backed up -  i did have, and it was in the process of backing up again when it died and it wiped out my external drive as well. SO it has taken me time to get back into doing things and from here on in there may not be many photos linked to the stories sadly.

Week 29 (July 15-21): Newsworthy

From Amy Johnson-Crow - Did any of your ancestors make it into the paper? What's an event that would have been newsworthy in their lifetime?

Going on “newsworthy” there has been quite a few relatives that have ended up in the newspapers for various reasons, but Cecil Lackey my Great Uncle seemed to be in them a lot. So I have used him.

Cecil Lackey is my great uncle, he was born 12th May 1904 in West Rainton County Durham, he was the eldest son of Gardiner Lackey and Margaret Ann Liddle. According to family members he “was quite a ladies man and always had the ladies round him”. The lucky lady that did capture his heart and marry him was Laura Evelyn Heddle, whose brother was married to Cecil’s sister Olive.

From an early age Cecil was involved with the local church – St Mary’s West Rainton. He attended the Sunday school and was also in the church choir. This is what started his career as a singer.

The first known news article of Cecil in the paper was in 1928 for a road accident involving his motor-bike and a child and how he had to pay compensation to the family.

He was also in the paper from the 1930’s until his death in 1979 linked to his singing career and the places he sang at. In his later life he sang at both Durham and Ripon Cathedrals (there may have been others I don’t know). He sang at many local churches, and buildings, was involved with operatic societies and much more. He sang with well known singers as well as on his own.

Many of his performances were in the local newspapers in and around the Durham area. There were loads of them ( I did have copies of all until I lost all of my laptop data, and I haven’t had chance to get back online to re-get them all.)
