Week 12 (Mar. 22-28): Loss

“Loss” could cover so many things – jobs, houses, family & babies, personal belongings etc. This really is a wide topic.

Once again, I can’t link it to one person or one family as so many of my ancestors have suffered terrible “loss” over the years.

Many of the ladies of my family have suffered the “loss” of a baby (or babies). I for one am included in this title. Therefore, I am dedicating this entry to all of those who have suffered the “loss” of a baby or child. Luckily in today’s world and thanks to the wonderful healthcare system we have there are not as many baby “Losses” as there were 50+years ago.  

I know how much it hurt and upset me over 3 miscarriages, but luckily I didn’t have to face what many of my ancestors did of having the baby and then it dying hours, days, weeks or months old. I can’t begin to think how hard this would have been, and for many it wasn’t just the 1 “loss” they endured.

So in memory of all the ladies in my direct line linked to me as my mother/Grandmother, who have suffered the “loss” of a baby or child, I am adding their names and how many babies (that I am aware of) that they lost (I am sure there will be many that I miss but this is not on purpose). Rest in peace little ones, and hugs to all you ladies and your families.

  • ·        Abigail Allen – 4 babies under a year old
  • ·        Susan Jane Sawyer – 2 under a year old
  • ·        Sarah Jarry – 1 baby 6months old
  • ·        Frances Russell  - 1 toddler under 2years

From AJC This may not be everyone’s take on the them but it’s mine. As I’ve already stated I now live in Cumbria, more precisely the very west coast of Cumbria (well 1mile from the coast but close enough). This is what ignited my thoughts for the theme of “closer to home”. Before I go into things linked to the theme, I need to add some history – the Lackey family originally came from Scotland and were under the name of MacGregor, however due to bad behaviour they were banished from Scotland and sent to Ireland where they lost the MacGregor name and became Lackey’s (it means slave). After my line of the family left Ireland they moved to Durham, and from here they met and married families from Yorkshire and moved further afield. Week 3 – Long Line (Jan 15-21)

Is there a trait or an occupation that seems to have been in your family tree for generations? Is there a line in your genealogy that's been in a particular place for a long, long time? Maybe you have Long as a surname. Be creative! From AJC This topic has taken a bit of thinking of what to write about. My first thought was do I have anyone named “Long” in the tree that I could use (1 lady who is distant relative so not much use or info), I then thought about how “long” it has taken me to do research and such BUT that doesn’t fit with the long line theme, so thinking cap back on and I thought about the longest line of the family tree going back to whoever, but the little voice in my head says “wont most people use this?” I then thought about the Lackey family occupation as boot & shoemakers as a long line, but it wasn’t really that long, so I decide to look at photos for inspiration and that’s when it hit me – My parents wedding photo’s loads of them had a “ Long Line ” ...

  Week 39 (Sept. 23-29): Should Be a Movie From Amy Johnson-Crow - Good movies have good stories at their heart. What ancestor has a story that you think should be a movie? This hasn’t been an east theme for me, as people I thought of have been used for other things. So it has come down to someone that I think would “ make a good movie ” (and you will see why) and that is my Great Grandfather Arthur Linett/Linel/Lynes/Linneth Thompson. (his name changes per document). Arthur was born the 11 th December 1876 in South Runcton, Norfolk. He was 1 of 11 children his parents had. He was 2 nd from youngest. His parents were farmers and he kept this on during his life. In the photos I have of him, he is always well dressed and has a hat, a pipe, shirt, waistcoat and pocket watch, which don’t add to the farmer feel.
