Week 11 (Mar. 15-21): Fortune



This theme of “fortune” had me thinking of all sorts of things – did I have anyone called “fortune”? no I don’t. was anyone really rich and worth a “fortune”? not that I know of. I also googled other words for “fortune” and nothing made a sensible link to the family tree.

The only person who came to mind was an ancestor whose family went Australia during the gold rush and he became a pioneer out there. But I have already used him.

However, it did occur to me that actually trying to research the family tree has cost me a “fortune”!!! From site subscriptions to buying certificates, to petrol in cars to go to places, my electricity, postage costs linked to writing to request info or sending it to other people, paid credits at library's and record offices and so much more.

But it keeps me amused and out of trouble, and I love finding out new things and new people. So I would say this “fortune” has been money well spent.

From AJC This may not be everyone’s take on the them but it’s mine. As I’ve already stated I now live in Cumbria, more precisely the very west coast of Cumbria (well 1mile from the coast but close enough). This is what ignited my thoughts for the theme of “closer to home”. Before I go into things linked to the theme, I need to add some history – the Lackey family originally came from Scotland and were under the name of MacGregor, however due to bad behaviour they were banished from Scotland and sent to Ireland where they lost the MacGregor name and became Lackey’s (it means slave). After my line of the family left Ireland they moved to Durham, and from here they met and married families from Yorkshire and moved further afield. Week 3 – Long Line (Jan 15-21)

Is there a trait or an occupation that seems to have been in your family tree for generations? Is there a line in your genealogy that's been in a particular place for a long, long time? Maybe you have Long as a surname. Be creative! From AJC This topic has taken a bit of thinking of what to write about. My first thought was do I have anyone named “Long” in the tree that I could use (1 lady who is distant relative so not much use or info), I then thought about how “long” it has taken me to do research and such BUT that doesn’t fit with the long line theme, so thinking cap back on and I thought about the longest line of the family tree going back to whoever, but the little voice in my head says “wont most people use this?” I then thought about the Lackey family occupation as boot & shoemakers as a long line, but it wasn’t really that long, so I decide to look at photos for inspiration and that’s when it hit me – My parents wedding photo’s loads of them had a “ Long Line ” ...

  Week 39 (Sept. 23-29): Should Be a Movie From Amy Johnson-Crow - Good movies have good stories at their heart. What ancestor has a story that you think should be a movie? This hasn’t been an east theme for me, as people I thought of have been used for other things. So it has come down to someone that I think would “ make a good movie ” (and you will see why) and that is my Great Grandfather Arthur Linett/Linel/Lynes/Linneth Thompson. (his name changes per document). Arthur was born the 11 th December 1876 in South Runcton, Norfolk. He was 1 of 11 children his parents had. He was 2 nd from youngest. His parents were farmers and he kept this on during his life. In the photos I have of him, he is always well dressed and has a hat, a pipe, shirt, waistcoat and pocket watch, which don’t add to the farmer feel.
