52 ancestors Week 30 (July 26-Aug. 1): Health

Week 30 (July 26-Aug. 1): Health Margaret Rose Thompson Nurse

Health” could cover many things – those that have bad “Health” (there’s loads of them including myself), it could be linked to those who ended up in asylums (again there’s loads but I can’t think of who offhand), those who died from “Health” problems or those who worked in a “health” care profession (I was a volunteer with St John Ambulance as were my children, but not using that option.)

I have decided to use my Aunt Margaret Rose Thompson, she was born 9 Nov 1944 in Ely Cambridgshire and was the daughter of Amy Rose Bland and Arthur Thompson and sister to Victor, Fred, Doreen and Joyce. Margaret was only 8years old when her mother died of cancer and she was only 14 when her father died. She was then brought up by her sister Doreen.

The photo left was taken in Ely in 1948 and shows Margaret (child), sat between her parents, the lady on left is her sister Doreen, the man standing is her brother Fred and the lady on right is her sister Joyce.

In July 1966 Margaret married Dennis Collen at Ely Register Office. After they were married they moved to Kings Lynn, Norfolk as Margaret trained and worked as a nurse at the west Norfolk and Kings Lynn General Hospital, as did her sister Doreen who brought her up, but I have never found any records linked to Doreen.

The only document I can find linked to Margaret is for 30th November 1967 in the 1968 register (image right). I don’t know how long she was a nurse for or if she specialised in a set area.  She may have been qualified before she got married but there are pages and pages of Margaret Thompson on the nurses register, none have the middle name of Rose or the initial R.

Margaret and Dennis had their 1st child in May 1970 in Peterborough, John Dennis Collen. The image below is Margaret and son John at my parents wedding on 29th August 1972 in Peterborough. They then had a second son in October 1974 Christopher John Collen, again born in Peterborough. As a family they lived in Peterborough.

Margaret was diagnosed with Breast Cancer but sadly it was too far gone to treat and on 2st March 1984 at only 40years of age she sadly died. Leaving her husband and 2 young sons.

Although i was born n 1982, i don't remember Aunty Margaret. My Mum said that she had a similar personailty to her.
