52 ancestors Week 17 (April 22nd -28th ): Land

Week 17 (April 22nd -28th ): Land

From Amy Johnson Crow - Farming ancestors, homesteaders, and military bounty land claimants are all on deck this week. Who does "land" make you think of?

For the theme of “land” I looked to see if I had an ancestor with  this as a surname – I did (but only for a short time) as her name had been transcribed wrongly and she was a laud not “land” which explains why I couldn’t find records on her. So, this was not an option. I don’t have any information of any “land girls” during the war so this wasn’t an option. Therefore, I have gone with my great grandfather and his family who “worked the land” as agricultural/farm labourers.

Arthur (Lynes/Lineth/Linett) Thompson was born on 11th December 1876 and baptised 18th February 1877 (I have both dates linked to census records and certificates.) He was the son of John “Valentine” Thompson and Mary Ann Hanner. He married Emma Jane Crockford in 1900 in Downham, Norfolk, uk.

According to family stories Arthur and Emma had 5 sons together, however, on the 1911 census it says 11 years of marriage and children born none. No-one of the family could provide or confirm any names. Therefore, I’m not sure they exist.

Arthur and Emma split up at some point before 1926 when he (apparently) had a child with Emma’s niece Amy Rose Bland. They had 4 definite children and 1 that has been named at funerals as “brother” BUT Amy would have only been 13years old when he was born. So again, not sure on this, nor can I find him.

Anyway, back to Arthur, he was born into a family of farmers/agricultural “land” labourers. On the 1881 census Arthur was 4years old but his father and eldest brother were listed as agricultural labourers and were living at Runcton Bottom, South Runcton, Norfolk.

On the 1891 census Arthur was aged 14 and him, his father and brothers were all listed as agricultural labourers and were living at Runcton Bottom, South Runcton, Norfolk.

On Arthur and Emma’s Marriage certificate of 1900 both Arthur and his father (listed as “Valentine”) are listed as labourer.

On the 1901 census Arthur is listed as Agricultural labourer (ordinary), living at Thorpe Road, South Runcton, Norfolk. His brother Seth is living at Field Barn, Thorpe Road, South Runcton and is a shepherd on farm worker.

On the 1911 census Arthur is listed as a labourer, and they are living at Shrub hill Farm, Hockwold , Norfolk. This farm still exisits today and the land is used for planting and growing turf. I don’t know if anyone lives there or not.

On the 1939 census Arthur is listed as married to Amy R, however they did NOT marry until 1942. On both the census and marriage certificate he is listed as agricultural labourer.

I don’t have any of the children’s birth or marriage certificates (except Doreen’s birth) and father is not listed (even though she says it is Arthur).

I’m not sure exactly what type of farm work he did, but I’m sure it would have been very hard and physically demanding on him.
