 Week 1 - foundations

As with the previous 2years of 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks I am going to start with myself as the “foundation” stone. The reason for this is I am the only living person that has any interest in the family history.

 The “foundation” of my family history work started 30years ago, it sounds a long time but I am by no means a professional.

 I was involved with Girl Guides and St John Ambulance at the time and linked to one of the two we were doing a badge linked to family history and this was where it all begin. My tree for this project was hand written and contained very little information – names, dates of births and the odd date of death as many people were still alive then and photos of who I could. It also had limited people of me and my sister, our parents and their parents and grandparents. I think it may have had marriage dates that were known but that is it.

 I enjoyed the above project and over the years made progress from my “foundation” tree and got further. I bought certificates, visited cemeteries and record offices and then when I got internet and records came online things really took off.

Week 4 – Close to home (Jan 22-28)

From AJC This may not be everyone’s take on the them but it’s mine. As I’ve already stated I now live in Cumbria, more precisely the very west coast of Cumbria (well 1mile from the coast but close enough). This is what ignited my thoughts for the theme of “closer to home”. Before I go into things linked to the theme, I need to add some history – the Lackey family originally came from Scotland and were under the name of MacGregor, however due to bad behaviour they were banished from Scotland and sent to Ireland where they lost the MacGregor name and became Lackey’s (it means slave). After my line of the family left Ireland they moved to Durham, and from here they met and married families from Yorkshire and moved further afield. Week 3 – Long Line (Jan 15-21)

Is there a trait or an occupation that seems to have been in your family tree for generations? Is there a line in your genealogy that's been in a particular place for a long, long time? Maybe you have Long as a surname. Be creative! From AJC This topic has taken a bit of thinking of what to write about. My first thought was do I have anyone named “Long” in the tree that I could use (1 lady who is distant relative so not much use or info), I then thought about how “long” it has taken me to do research and such BUT that doesn’t fit with the long line theme, so thinking cap back on and I thought about the longest line of the family tree going back to whoever, but the little voice in my head says “wont most people use this?” I then thought about the Lackey family occupation as boot & shoemakers as a long line, but it wasn’t really that long, so I decide to look at photos for inspiration and that’s when it hit me – My parents wedding photo’s loads of them had a “ Long Line ” ...

  Week 39 (Sept. 23-29): Should Be a Movie From Amy Johnson-Crow - Good movies have good stories at their heart. What ancestor has a story that you think should be a movie? This hasn’t been an east theme for me, as people I thought of have been used for other things. So it has come down to someone that I think would “ make a good movie ” (and you will see why) and that is my Great Grandfather Arthur Linett/Linel/Lynes/Linneth Thompson. (his name changes per document). Arthur was born the 11 th December 1876 in South Runcton, Norfolk. He was 1 of 11 children his parents had. He was 2 nd from youngest. His parents were farmers and he kept this on during his life. In the photos I have of him, he is always well dressed and has a hat, a pipe, shirt, waistcoat and pocket watch, which don’t add to the farmer feel.
