 WEEK 28 – Random

On the theme of “random” I am linking it to my paternal great grandfathers. This is a really “random” story linked to them both of them. Let me introduce both men.

Gardiner Lackey was born 21st July 1881 in West Rainton Durham, he was the son of Robert and Mary. He was a boot & shoe maker. He married and had 8 children. Gardiner left.

 

Arthur Wood was born 14 September 1885 in Bradford, Yorkshire. He was an enginer and machine maker and later worked in the coal mines. Arthur right.

 From looking at the 2 photos neither give much clue linked to their occupations as to which gentleman did what as both appear to be well dressed. The “random” thing linked to these is that my dad (their grandson) told me many years ago that Gardiner was Arthur and Arthur was Gardiner, both photos only had Peter’s  grandfather on the back. I believed him as he would know.

However, after he died in 2006 I was in contact with one of his cousins from the Lackey line not the Wood line. The cousin sent me some photos and in them was Gardiner Lackey and his wife at his daughters wedding (pic above). AND “Gardiner” wasn’t “Gardiner” as I had him, (namely Arthur). I questioned the cousin as to whether that was Gardiner and not Arthur Wood and was asked who Arthur was, so I informed them Dads other grandfather. They sent me even more photos of Gardiner as the tall thin man above left. Sadly my Dad couldn’t be told that he had got them mixed up, but to be fair on him both died when he was in his early 20s so a long time ago.

SO, for many years both men were “random” on the family tree and not with their correct family.

From AJC This may not be everyone’s take on the them but it’s mine. As I’ve already stated I now live in Cumbria, more precisely the very west coast of Cumbria (well 1mile from the coast but close enough). Before I go into things linked to the theme, I need to add some history – the Lackey family originally came from Scotland and were under the name of MacGregor, however due to bad behaviour they were banished from Scotland and sent to Ireland where they lost the MacGregor name and became Lackey’s (it means slave). After my line of the family left Ireland they moved to Durham, and from here they met and married families from Yorkshire and moved further afield. I live in Whitehaven, and on a (very) clear day you can see parts of Ireland from the Whitehaven Harbour, I haven’t yet seen it but it is said you can via the telescopes up on the cliffs and in the museum. Week 3 – Long Line (Jan 15-21)

Is there a trait or an occupation that seems to have been in your family tree for generations? Is there a line in your genealogy that's been in a particular place for a long, long time? Maybe you have Long as a surname. Be creative! From AJC This topic has taken a bit of thinking of what to write about. My first thought was do I have anyone named “Long” in the tree that I could use (1 lady who is distant relative so not much use or info), I then thought about how “long” it has taken me to do research and such BUT that doesn’t fit with the long line theme, so thinking cap back on and I thought about the longest line of the family tree going back to whoever, but the little voice in my head says “wont most people use this?” I then thought about the Lackey family occupation as boot & shoemakers as a long line, but it wasn’t really that long, so I decide to look at photos for inspiration and that’s when it hit me – My parents wedding photo’s loads of them had a “ Long Line ” ...

  Week 39 (Sept. 23-29): Should Be a Movie From Amy Johnson-Crow - Good movies have good stories at their heart. What ancestor has a story that you think should be a movie? This hasn’t been an east theme for me, as people I thought of have been used for other things. So it has come down to someone that I think would “ make a good movie ” (and you will see why) and that is my Great Grandfather Arthur Linett/Linel/Lynes/Linneth Thompson. (his name changes per document). Arthur was born the 11 th December 1876 in South Runcton, Norfolk. He was 1 of 11 children his parents had. He was 2 nd from youngest. His parents were farmers and he kept this on during his life. In the photos I have of him, he is always well dressed and has a hat, a pipe, shirt, waistcoat and pocket watch, which don’t add to the farmer feel.
